Read the Q&A about the supreme court on page A2 "What's next for the supreme court".

1. What did you learn about the issue with the supreme court?
I learned that Supreme Court will be getting a new supreme court justice due to the passing of
Justice Antonin Scalia. However, it's likely that President Obama's recommendations won't be listened to and the Republicans will get their way again. That last part wasn't in the article, more of a personal opinion.
2. Who recently died that is causing this situation?
Justice Antonin Scalia
3. Do you think there should be pressure put on congress to deal with this deadlock problem?
Yes! Someone some where should have the power to call of this deadlock we're in so that government and President Obama can move towards making a decision.
4. Are you aware of the problems facing the president as he works towards appointing the next supreme court judge? What do you think should happen? I am very aware of the situation and it angers me that the Republicans in power can just stop government momentum whenever they aren't getting their way. It's only fair that the President, though his term ends soon, should get to work cooperativelywith the Senate to make a decision.

Blog #4- Magazine Part 2

1. Early Magazine Covers- In the mid-1700s, the earliest magazines had an opening page to a title and table of contents. When early magazines used covers, they modeled them after the covers of books. It contained the title and publication data. There were no descripttion indicating what would be found inside the magazine. Cover lines began to appear within such generic covers in the later 1800s.

2. The Poster Cover- The Poster cover was very popular the 1890s all the way to the 1960s. It is an artistic technique that took over graphic design at the time. The covers of many of the big, oversized magazines looked like they should be printed and hung on the wall.

3. Pictures Married to Type- This is when the cover of a magazine interacts with the text and captions on the cover. It is either incorporated with the image, or is hidden behind it.

4. In the Forest of Words- this included strong cover art and font type. Magazines in the 90s made cover lines just as prominent as cover art. It included vivid colors and quality images.

Blog #3- My Favorite Cover

Favorite Magazine Cover:

Web Description: "Today the final One Direction cover of Fabulous magazine has been unveiled as Britain's biggest boy band begin their takeover of The Sun, Britain's biggest newspaper.
The One Direction takeover of The Sun starts today with the guys guest-editing TV Magazine. Inside you will read all about the boys views on this year's X-Factor judges and what TV show has made them shed tears."
Critique: I think the black and white filter along with the poses make the cover shot very dramatic. I love the far off looks. If I could correct one thing it would be that the shoes on both ends are cut off. It's a little distracting. The original hardcopy might have included the full shot, but the web version has some flaws.

Portraits and Self-Portarits

Tip 1: Have your subject focus their attention on something unseen and outside the field of view of your camera. This can create a feeling of candidness and also create a little intrigue and interest as the viewer of the shot wonders what they are looking at.

Tip 2: The person in your portrait is the main point of interest – however sometimes when you place them into different contexts with different backgrounds you can dramatically alter the mood in a shot.
Sometimes you want your background to be as minimalistic as possible.
Tip 3: Get close. The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact.

Environmental Self Portrait- I chose this image because the black and white diner environment gives it a very retro feel. I like that there are two cups ad places settings, but only one person.

Photography Self Portrait- I went searching for this photo because I remembered it from an episode of Modern Family. I thought it'd be the perfect example of a photography self portrait. I like that it has some color editing with a filter, it makes it dramatic.

Casual Self Portrait- I chose this photo because it looks like the kind of candid you'd put on instagram, that's what casual self portraits are. I like how hippy she's dressed.

1. What are the characteristics of an environmental portrait? An environmental portrait includes a background that gives you some context to the photo.
2. What is the difference between an environmental portrait and a casual portrait? An environmental portrait includes some features of the environment and surroundings, a casual portrait is often focused on one main subject (no other elements).
3. What will you need to do to get a really good self-portrait? To get a  really good self portrait you need good perspective and interesting light.
4.  When you go take these pictures, and you will eventually turn in one of each, a portrait and a self-portrait, describe to me what you would like to do and who you would like to take a portrait of and where you might shoot these images.
I will either take a self portrait in my music room (probably making it black and white later) or a portrait of my dad and dog. They have some cute moments.
