Car Raid

Bowie High School graduate, Abby Black, has just made the long drive in from Arkansas. Her 2008 Mazda holds more than her pillows and clothes, it contains styrofoam, popsicle sticks, and a half-used jug of Elmer's glue.
"I am a freshman at the University of Arkansas majoring in Architectural Studies," Black explained, "There are a lot of hands on projects. It's definitely craftier than people think."
Just peeking into an open box in the backseat you can immediately tell that Abby Black has a creative personality.
"I keep a craft box for my larger scale class assignments, and a smaller one for when I just want to doodle," she said.
Black has kept all of her old sketchbooks from high school, where she took four years of Art classes.
"My car is pretty messy in general. It's always scattered with post-its and pencils just in case I get some inspiration."
Photography is also casual habit of Black's. She doesn't plan to take any photography courses, but she did have a few impressive polaroids lying on the dashboard.
"I do have a polaroid addiction," Black laughed, "I love driving through the bigger cities on my way home and snapping pictures of downtown."
Aside from the Visual Arts, Black was a Silver Star and dedicated dancer all throughout high school. However, she did not sign up for any dance team when she got to college.
"Letting go of dance was a tough decision," Black said. "It wasn't just a team sport, it was a hobby. But since U of A didn't offer a similar activity that wasn't competitive and time consuming, I took this as an opportunity to start fresh."
Snooping around in the center console, I discovered a stash of sour patch kids and Chik-fil-a cups. The cups were being saved and stored for her summer project.
"I'm always saving stuff that I think will come in handy," Black explained. "It's the fun part about my major, everything can become useful."
When Black drove me home later that day, I pulled down the sun visor and a Delta Airlines envelope fell out.
"Over the holidays when I was meeting my family in Maine, I volunteered to take a later flight for a free round trip ticket. I'm still deciding where I want to go. Who knows when I'll take the trip, but it's a good reminder that I'm young and should travel while I have the chance."
Abby Black is a college freshman with an adventurous spirit. This architect in the making is going to make her mark on the skyline one day with her innovative ideas.

Short Answer:

Have you ever used Lyft or Uber to get a ride somewhere? Yes
If you have, what was your experience like? Uber is a really reliable way to get some where when you don't have anyone who can drive you. I've had some silent, awkward Uber rides, but also some fun ones with loud music and a cool driver.
If you have not, do you think that ride sharing is something you might use in the future?
I'll definitely use it again, but I guess I'll have to be a different city.
Do you think ride sharing is a good thing for a community like Austin? Yes, with a city so full of traffic ride sharing is a great way to minimize cars on the road.
What do you think the differences between ride sharing companies and a taxi cab company? Ride sharing companies and taxi cab companies are very similar. The only difference is how current and modern ride sharing has become with technology. It advanced very fast and left some of the safety precautions behind. Uber has been helpful for many, but I see how it can look daunting to those who voted against it.
Should they be held to the same standards regarding safety issues? Debatable, but since it would involve Uber pulling out of cities, I'm gonna say no.

Captain Phillips Movie Review

Captain Phillips SEAsed the Day

The U.S. cargo ship Maersk Alabama, captained by Richard Phillips and played by Tom Hanks, is on a risky route around the coast of Africa to deliver supplies to countries in Africa. Already aware of the pirate ridden seas, Captain Phillips and First Officer Shane Murphy (Michael Chernus) run preventative safety drills only to discover alleged pirate boats on their radar. After the clever tactics of Captain Phillips, one of the boats tailing the ship decides to turn back. The other boat is an armed group of Somali pirates. They later manage to hijack the cargo ship and Captain Phillips heroically sends the ships crew to hide out while he remains in the control room.
Somali pirates, Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), Walid Elmi (Mahat M. Ali), Nour Najee (Faysal Ahmed), and Adan Bilal (Barkhad Abdirahman) Walid Elmi (Mahat M. Ali) find Captain Phillips and after demanding a large ransom, also want to search the ship due to the absence of the crew. While searching with Phillips as their prisoner, the ship crew captures Abduwali Muse and demands Captain Phillips in exchange for him. However things take a (s)tern for the worst, and in an aggressive negotiation with the crew the Somali pirates end up taking the ransom money and not releasing Captain Phillips. They all board an emergency lifeboat and head back towards Somalia. Now the ship's crew is left to contact the U.S. forces for help.
The character driven crew, specifically First Officer Shane Murphy, put you on the edge of your seat with their persistent journey to rescue Captain Phillips. In my opinion, they brought the most emotion to the film.
It can also be seen as the theme of the story. The determined team's unflagging venture was very moving and added a hopeful affect to the intense climax of the movie.
The ideal audience demographic for 'Captain Phillips' is anyone 13 and up who can handle thrilling story lines and violence. It is a pretty graphic movie with some light profanity so PG13+ is a fair rating.

I give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars. The movie progressed fairly low at the beginning, but once the plot became clear I couldn't look away. It was intriguing and kind of phycological the way things were handled. The certain details that the film exposed made you think about the events from every perspective. I highly recommend this film to anyone looking for a suspenseful film for movie night.

Short Answer: Please read the story on Page A1 "3 officials charge in Flint lead crisis"

What is your reaction to this story? This story pissed me off. I don't like that "the man" is not in jail. It's hard to take down someone in power, even when they do something that endangers thousands of people and families.
Did you know about this issue before reading this story? Yes, I've read about it before.
What should happen to the people who potentially knew that they were poisoning the people of Flint (including a lot of children)? A lot more than misdemeanor charges. These government officials should have been removed from office and detained immediately. No one in power should have had that information and let it go on for so long. I hope the people of Flint, Michigan get the safe drinking water they deserve, and hopefully the officials face jail time.

If it expands to the governor or even further, should those people be held accountable the same as the rest of the accused city leaders? No, other people might've not been told about the issue, just like the rest of Flint. Not everyone should face severe punishment. An investigation into the staff is probably necessary.

Free Write

Prompt: Good versus evil. Do they truly exist? Are there gray areas? Do good people do bad things?

Good versus evil does really exist. It's an ongoing battle that the world will forever endure. But it's not always the apparent fight between a kind heart and corrupt superpower, it's often just inside us. Deciding what effect you want to have on the world is the biggest good versus evil situation out there.
Finding yourself is a natural process that hits you in the most fragile time of your life, the teenage years. The new ideas your developing and being exposed to influence your decisions. You gain some perspective on the world which causes you to raise the question, how will I fit in it?
All the theories and plans out there, wether they be political, philosophical, scientific, etc., aren't completely bad or completely good. In a typical situation, some body is always going to benefit from a deal. There are, of course, situations that try and help everyone or end up failing for all parties involved. But the good and evil can be found in the root intention of an action.

It will take California and NY about 6 years to raise the minimum wage to $15. The planned bill should go into affect by 2022.

3. What school won the NCAA Men's basketball tournament last night and what was the final score? Page SE2 "Wildcats have finishing touch"

Villanova won the NCAA Men's basketball tournament last night and the final score was 77-74.

4. Which of the 10 Amazing Destinations would you want to visit and why? Page SA1 "See the World" NOTE: This story jumps....
I would love to visit Chile because the scenery looks beautiful and I'd like to try going on the cruise they talked about in the article.

5. Do you like idea of Instagram expanding videos from 15 second to 1 minute? Why or Why not? Page D1 "Instagram videos...."
I'd prefer the 15 second video to the 1 minute because the point of quick entertainment is quick. A minute is too long for Instagram.

(Not so)Short Answer:
Who are the major candidates left in the races? One the Democratic side the candidates left are Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. On the Republican side, it's Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich.
Are you supportive of a particular candidate? Why? YES I AM TOTALLY FEELING THE BERN.

I am supportive of Democratic-Socialist candidate, Bernie Sanders because I think he is one of the most authentic political figures ever. He has been fighting the good fight for years. The photos of him chained and running and protesting at Civil Rights rallies make me so happy that he is running. Sanders is a man of the people and I find his Socialist beliefs to be realistic goals that could greatly improve our country.
Do you think the United States is become more divided or more united as a whole as this process continues? I think the United States is very divided and it will only increase as people continue to go as far as Trump. Both parties have extremist candidates. Bernie is an extreme Liberal and Trump is an extreme Conservative. The idea that so many people support them both is a big thing for America to accept. It will be very challenging to get things done because it will be hard to compromise and agree.
What concerns you most about this election? The violence that is being threatening by Trumps supporters concerns me the most. The last thing our country needs is more brutality.
What are the big topics you think are pushing the discussions these candidates are having?

Right now, it's focused around abortion and the rights of the women getting them. Trump said something outrageous (what's new) so everyone is focusing on that. But another important topic is the quality of education and the price of it too.
Which topics are the most important to you? Quality of education is important to me. I'm a big Michael Moore fan and watching some of his films has opened my eyes to some socialist countries who have remodeled their school systems and ditched standardized testing. They allow their students to be kids outside of school, and since college is free, that takes away some future stress. In school they let students explore their passions, not just general knowledge of every core subject. One of the countries doing school like this is Finland, they have some of the highest intelligence levels in the world.

Sports Current Event

Step 1: Find a recent interesting sports article from the Austin American-Statesman.
http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ODE/AustinAmericanStatesmanNIE/

Step 2:  What is the headline? Houston Open Surpasses Masters Warmup Status

Step 3: Summary- The Houston Open moved the event dates causing Masters tournament warm up confusion. It is tradition, for some great players like Tiger Woods, to play through the course a week before the event at Augusta National.

Step 4: There wasn't any specific jargon, but the article did reference "the great green jacket," which some might to recognize as the Masters tournament jacket given to the winner.

Step 5: N/A

Step 6:  I think the article I focused on in the Statesman would be considered a N
ews Update because it covers the recent schedule changes with the almost back-to-back golf tournaments.

Step 7: The article referenced the 4 Masters wins of Tiger Woods and joked about him never playing the practice rounds offered a week before the tournament. The article stated that," you couldn't argue with those results. Then again, he was better than everyone else."

Ben Hogan was born on August 13, 1912 in Stephensville, Texas. His family moved to Fort Worth in 1921, where shortly after, his father committed suicide. Hogan and his brother started to caddy at Glen Garden until Hogan got serious and dropped out of high school (senior year) to focus on his game. Hogan went pro in February 1930.
Years after getting married in 1935, Hogan won his first professional tournament, The Hershey Four-Ball 1938.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, and when he returned wins his first major tournaments. Sadly, Ben Hogan was involved in a near-fatal car accident in 1949, in which he threw himself over his wife Valerie Fox, and got serious injuries. Hogan didn't go back to playing the same and spent most of his time doing hands off golf activities. He released his book, "Follow the Sun" and founded Hogan Company. He retired form competitive golf on 1971. Hogan died at his Forth Worth home on July 25, 1997.
